The Beginning

The purpose of this blog is to chronicle the experience of teaching myself to sew. My initial plan is to repurpose most of my clothing. Can I cut the parts, match them with another part, and make it all come back together; stitching the pieces to make a better whole? That's my plan.

Interestingly, I've read in several places that blogging about the experience will indeed make it more fun; as will participating in both in and offline sewing groups. I've tried to blog before but, being a grammar perfectionist to the nth degree and a lover of big words, it has been difficult to do. Finally, I'm at a place where I'm not concentrating so much on the way I write but, concentrating more on what it is I write about.

So after that brief introduction, this is where I am  ... I've researched sewing, and sewing machines, for several months now. During which I took an intro to sewing class that wasn't even worth my time. I mean seriously, I learned how to thread a needle and bobbin in the machine they provided and, well, that's pretty much it.

While doing my research, I told myself not to buy a machine until my spare room was decluttered and organized. Unfortunately, sometimes I don't listen very well. A couple weeks ago, I visited a sewing shop where a very nice sales lady asked what I wanted a machine to do for me. I told her I want to mainly sew garments, learn some quilting, and I'd also love to embroider quotes, affirmations, and scripture. Quickly, she cued into my personality and saw some of my needs. Then, she pointed me toward the machine most likely to be best for me. It was clear. She was very good at this and the baby lock Rachel quickly won my heart. Baby was a bit more expensive than I had ever planned to spend. Thankfully, the sales lady worked out a fantastic deal for me. With that, I couldn't leave baby Rachel behind. She is now home waiting for me to finish her room.
